Also, while Ace was not the strongest and Roger was strong, Garp did say the "Even when he faced a cloud of enemies BEYOND his power" (other translations are similar) Roger would not run, so in Ace's position in Marineford where he was not the strongest one there among his allies or enemies, and he faced an opponent that was stronger than him, Roger would also not have ran away even being as strong as Ace.

2025-08-26 19:30:59 +0000 UTCI'm a bit late, but I will point out the Bluejam WAS right there, and he WAS strong, so if they ALL ran away then nothing would be stopping Bluejam from chasing them also, it wouldn't be difficult, and he had a gun, so as he's chasing them he could hurt them and he WILL eventually catch up, after all he's the strongest one in the whole group. So while running might have seemed sensible, what would be the plan afterwards? You'd still be stuck with Bluejam and everyone is still in danger... So SOMEONE had to stay back to keep Bluejam from chasing after the others, and it had to be someone strong enough to stall Bluejam at least little bit... So with that in mind, with no one else volunteering, then Luffy is quite litterally still in danger from Bluejam and Ace is correct in thinking that is he (or someone else who is capable) didn't stay behind then the risk is there that Luffy or anyone else could be hurt/lost..
