2025-08-11 22:31:07 +0000 UTCLike, bluntly, sometimes you spend your entire life up to that point thinking that you must be a heterosexual, because everyone tells you that's what you're supposed to be, and there are no other possibilities. And you spend your life in a haze of unsatisfying relationships that cannot possibly give you what you need to thrive. And I think we see some of this with Joyce's fear and reluctance around penises in general, and Joe's in specific. (Her repeated nightmares, her sudden withdrawal from full sexual intercourse with Joe) And then you suddenly have this awakening, and you make a connection on a level that you had never known existed or was possible before, and, genuinely, everything in your life changes in that moment. And I see that in how Joyce is acting, the way she's behaving and emoting. And it feels to me, I guess, like a lot of the readers have no touchstone for this, no way to connect to it, so for them, it's as if Joyce suddenly became an alien. They have no context for her behavior, because nothing in their life has given them context for this experience.

2025-08-11 20:28:23 +0000 UTCI do find myself repeatedly wondering how many of the angry commentators are queer, or have any experience with queer self discovery or queer relationships. The vibe I have gotten is that the paladins are largely hets, folks who don't have any life experiences to help them understand what it's like to only discover your sexuality and your selfhood later in life, and how messy and difficult that process can be.
