Unused strips for July 8/9, 2025

These were the two strips about Dorothy's radicalization before I added another strip in the middle to flesh it out a bit more. I wanted to highlight more the privilege of leaving this discomfort zone and returning home to their boyfriends, plus I wanted to more closely link Dorothy's true political awakening with her queer awakening.

Dorothy can't just go home now and be who she was an hour ago. She's been made to smell the shit and can't pretend all this is something she wants to be in charge of anymore while ascending to power through the proper channels. And she probably hates that bit of herself that wanted that, same as Joyce hates her earlier, stupider self that thought the world was 6000 years old and that gay people were evil.

And how'd Joyce get where she is now? Rage.

I wrote this a few months before the election last year, and I knew there was a good chance that by the time these strips ran, everything about what Dorothy is becoming might also be illegal. Protesting, kissing a girl in public, whole list of things -- and Dorothy has always seen herself as lawful good. RIP lawful good Dorothy

though if Harris won, Dorothy'd still be seen as a villain by the establishment, so i guess the narrative wins either way ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha cry

Anyway, time to run home and start asking people smarter than her how best to use her talents to affect change and/or kiss Joyce more.

Comments

This version of the strip is SO much better, the retooling really hit the nail on the head, and "Your anger is a tool for kindness" is an absolute banger of a line.

Cris Hylton

Same. Even when I don't agree with David (ferinstance, I don't know if it's "privilege" to leave a protest that protestors are ALREADY LEAVING), I respect that he's always careful in consideration of his craft.

T Campbell

I vote for more Joyce kissing.

Astariel

I've been pretty clear how I feel about Dorothy giving up on her ambitions but at least we have the rationale now and I do appreciate linking the political awakening with her feelings for Joyce.
