I love this episode too. Shanks and Whitebeard are some of the most badass characters from One Piece. Sadly you won't be seeing them again for a while tho 😂

2024-09-25 03:00:18 +0000 UTCTime to yap a little bit lol. When it comes to shanks losing his arm to a sea king, there is a very popular interpretation I’ve seen and also agree with. That is, it’s not so much as to motivate Luffy, as it is to show him the reality of life on the seas. As you said, Luffy was already really motivated before shanks lost his arm, shown by him continually asking shanks to go along with his crew. So in the moment of saving Luffy, shanks decided to lose his arm to “bet it on the new era” all in order to show Luffy the consequences of the sea and to try and keep him from doing something reckless and cutting his life short. Now as for the real world explanation. Oda originally did not plan on shanks losing an arm. It was actually due to the advice of his editor, that had told Oda it was needed to spice up the story a bit more. Seeing as how that takes place in the 1st chapter, it really helps to get the reader more invested, which then makes the scene of shanks giving his hat to Luffy all the more impactful imo.
