He's reached the point of becoming the friend of the bosses, especially Don Eladio likes him, and he was already going to be promoted and reach the level of becoming someone important for the cartel and a special figure there, and they know him personally. So if he didn't open the gate and waited more a couple days or so, he could've told Lalo about Gus having a gun to his father's head, and Don Eladio would deal with it. But he now stooped down so much to the point he's still a dog for Gus and the cartel want him dead. He ruined it.
