Ellsworth is right. Alma was doing drugs initially because she married the first husband because he was rich and she could pay her father's debts. Now, once again, she is married to a man she does not love and is not happy with. The miscarriage didn't help, but she is stuck in a marriage of convenience and she started using again to cope.
