I'm with Tank on this one. But also, there is a deeper meaning to the serial-killer invention: it is a story, a fiction, a novel, an article. Season 5 is about the news media -- the people that make narratives out of daily events to help us make sense of the chaos of everyday life (of course with the usual abuses and corruptions, imperfections, etc. present as well). McNulty's killer invention is yet another "story", a narrative, that juxtaposes with those that the media create -- one must make one's own mind about the validity and truthfulness of all stories. Finally, The Wire is itself also a story, a narrative, and this being the final season it is a way for the show writers to break the fourth wall and make the viewer think about how they're interacting with the story that they receive, consume, believe. Shakespearean.

2023-06-06 13:07:54 +0000 UTCI don't know that most people hate this season. I think it's not quite up to the same bar as past seasons though. Especially following season 4, which was probably the best. Season 5, although not being the best of the Wire, is still among the best TV ever produced.

I think for a lot of people, the scene at the end of this with McNulty is just too much of a leap and out of character, especially given where he ended in season 4. I tend to agree, BUT I trust that if the writers had been given a couple more episodes to work with, they would have better set up Jimmy's devolution to drunken wtf-ery; secondly, that type of thing slides by without a second thought on other shows like every 10 minutes, but The Wire is held to a higher standard. Apparently there's also a lot of people who find the newspaper stuff "boring", but I definitely find it intriguing and I'm glad it's looking like you guys will too.

You both covered all the essential shit in the review, but following what Formal said I think these lines in prison dialogue #1 alone (as well as the masterful prison scene #2) deserve a 9.5 by themselves alone: "I say bygones be bygones but fuck all them East Side bitches. That's just the way I feel about it. I got nuthin but love in my heart for West Side niggas. Nothing but love! .... Course....I mean....ya know.......I gotta have my taste, too!" --> $$$ So 100 stacks for that love nonetheless you hear? $$$ [Just to be clear, I'm not meaning no diss or offense to any city district or side anywhere, we all together in this shit in real life.]
