Warlock Damage: Eldritch Blast and True Strike

Warlock Damage: Eldritch Blast and True Strike Warlock Damage: Eldritch Blast and True Strike

Correct me if wrong, but I didn’t hear you mention Weapon Masteries, and as, damaging cantrip or not, you Certainly “hit a creature with this weapon”- wording ripped directly from Vex and Topple. In a small surprise, Rapier may be better all the way to 17 for True Strike Warlock (unless AB Shillelagh+ABTS which… I don’t like)

I actually like to play at mid to high tier . I don't like low levels becuase I feel my class wont have its features or spells.

@treantmonk, you need to do an EB build with Summon Undead once you have third level slots

stephen Edmondson

Did you use Magical Cunning to get additional spells?

Louis Manko Levite

It seems like a bigger stretch even than true strike but I wonder if shillelagh could count as a cantrip that deals damage (is increasing the weapon’s damage die any different than adding d6s to the hits like true strike does). If you get it through pact of the tome it would be a warlock cantrip and then you could take it with pact of the blade to get extra attacks.

I would take Summon Undead or Fey

Same conclusion here. It's not even that close. Goolock looks real solid, though you do sacrifice your 1st turn of combat since the summon aberration only lasts 1 minute so it's hard to precast.

Summon Fey is my go to for Warlock DPS, comes online at 5, adds more damage than Hex initially and increases at level 7, you can use each fight with the assumptions you have made and you can use it to get advantage with the Devil's Sight/Darkness combo from Summon Fey. Only limitation is a 30 foot range, but you benefit from being in Darkness for defense. Furthermore if you do get stuck in melee you can have an Imp familiar bonus action attack with advantage since they have Devil's Sight too. One additional option for DPS is to go GOOlock and have both Summon Fey and Summon Aberration up at same time, costs your first eldritch blast use but adds to your damage.

So the new warlock baseline is basically unchanged up through tier 3. Everyone now gets a damage spike in tier 4, as expected.

For the True Strike build wouldn't it have been better to use Crusher instead of Charger so you can launch Large or smaller targets prone via Crusher + Repelling Blast no save? Also for the True Strike doesn't Charger only work on the Attack Action not the Magic Action, so no True Strike?

I’d be curious to see if Armor of Agathys is a better choice than Eldritch Smite for those getting into melee. Or Maybe combine the two. Thoughts?

Or use excess slots for casting Scorching Ray. Hex turns scorching ray into 3d6×(1 + spell level), which beats Blight.

You decreased in damage going from level 6 to 7? You did 19.9 at level 6 then said "we go up to 19." Where's the up?

The radiant soul level 6 feature's wording has changed from "when you cast a spell that deals radiant or fire damage, you can add your Charisma modifier to one radiant or fire damage roll of that spell" to "Once per turn, when a spell you cast deals Radiant or Fire damage, you can add your Charisma modifier to that spell's damage". I'm trying to decide if that means the same spell could trigger extra damage on different turns. If so, things like searing smite and guardian of faith could be pretty juicy.

Daniel Renzi

At minimum, you should dump your extra spell slots into Hellish Rebuke.

Every warlock build I've calculated DPR for gets the biggest return on their concentration from Summon Fey (or Demon). Especially if Spirit Shroud is off limit I don't think Warlock dpr is going to look great without a summon built into the calcs

How about 1 level of fighter to get two weapon fighting, armor, con prof and weapon masteries. Take short sword for vex and scimitar for nick. Treantmonk said it himself more attacks are better for Hex. Focus on Dex over Cha to keep you off hand attacks relevant. 4th level consider dual wielder to weaponize bonus action in addition to Nick.. Although.. is Pact of the Chain not an option in addition to Pact of the Blade? You can do some decent/reliable damage with the sphinx in place of your nick attack until 5th level where you could switch to Pseudodragon with Investment of the Chain Master. The bonus action poison (that relies on your spell DC) that can go real south for your opponent if they fail seems good on paper?

Tariq Shawer

First! I think the Pact of the Blade should be decent. 3 attacks, heavy weapon master, grab Fighter lvl for a fighting style, armor and some weapon masteries. Using a Greatsword and a Heavy Crossbow, you can just skip Eldritch Blast altogether. You'll need Great Weapon Master and Crossbow Expert to do that, and that does subtract from Charisma, but starting with a 17 Charisma, you can get that to 20 with 2 ASI's, and use the other two for those two Feats. Be a Celestial Warlock for the healing and temp hp to make up for your low HP, and you've still got an Epic Boon to grab that could help with that, too.
