Backwards compatibility also allows kobold, can also get true strike.

Yep. Iva run some numbers on Ranged INT Assassin with True Strike and Elven Accuracy and it looked really nicely. It typically made around 200% of Warlock Baseline in first round and 150% in subsequent turns.

High elf can pick a wizard cantrip which could be true strike.

I have a question about the Arcane Trickster. It says when you select a rogue level you can replace a spell with another spell for which you have spell slots. Does that mean as a multi-class Wizard/Arcane Trickster, I could select spells for slots I wouldn't normally (in the 2014) rules be able to select? For example, at 20th level (9 AT/ 11 Wizard) I have a 7th level slot, but Wizard only gives me access to 6th level spells. Would I be able to use this to select that 7th level spell?

What's the theme of thief? You climbed into a wizard's tower and stole some magic items? It just doesn't come together.

Emmm, why? I mean, additional d6s are cool, but True Strike forces you to use Spellcasting mod instead of dex. Most feats you want to take will insrease your dex as well.

1) you don't swap as of today from what I read
2) still good skills
3) you do if that still beats any significant enemy

There's actually quite a bit to discuss, but one should include spells in the matter, probably

I don't think that matters too much. Still, there's charger, there's Goliath, poisoner, a valor Bard inspiration...

High Elf gets a Wizard cantrip that you can switch out, so that’s another way to get True Strike

So I take it you neglected to notice the +proficiency to initiative? Even if you never switch this is good, but also- maybe sometimes you Do want to let the Caster go first, particularly if they also rolled decently high, and even in the case you really really want to be first, that d20 roll is a lot of variance, and there will be times the Fighter who doesn’t care when they go gets a 21 initiative, and even with your +10 and advantage you only get a 15- if Improved Initiative ONLY gave the option to switch, it’d be a pass, but with a welcome bonus on top, the option to switch is just something you can do when it’s beneficial.
As for skill crossover- background gives proficiencies, rogue has a LONG LIST of skills they want and proficiencies in skills they were going to take means you have more space for skills you Want to take. I’d rather have more crossover than less, because less usually means proficiency in skills I never cared about

True Strike seems like an obvious choice for a level 17 assassin. Anything which adds dice to a single attack really- ideas?

Lol only Wizard left… can we just say it didn’t change and start going through all spells and/or make a 2024 dipping guide and build recommendations?

Late Game Assassin is BEGGING to get access to True Strike- either Human with Wizard Initiate, or burn a feat, or in a pinch multiclass

It was probably way too good of a feature, but the Thief ability in Baldurs Gate 3 to take two bonus actions per turn was very fun.

I don't know about Assassins wanting to be Criminals. Seems like a ton of anti-synergy, 1) overlapping tool proficiency with thieves tools (do you get to swap one out? Unclear as I don't have a book yet); 2) the skill proficiencies from criminal are already available to rogues (might be fine); and most importantly 3) you're probably not going to want to be switching out your initiative to give a controlling spellcaster a better initiative which is the best use of alert.

The new Arcane Lock spell is not very Rogue-friendly (welcome to D&D, were Magic! is the solution to everything)...

Another thing with Stroke of luck is it can now turn a failed death save into a critical success. (Are death saves unchanged in 2024PHB?)

Or maybe increase the die size to d8, d10 and d12 at the same levels?

I really felt like an extra d6 at levels 5, 11, and 17 would have nicely buffed the rogue at appropriate levels and helped make Cunning Strike feel less expensive.

I like your positivity. I think however you are misjudging the thief level 3 ability. I really think at that level mundane equippment like the chain, manacles ball bearings etc. are very useful. Or are they not using the utilize action anymore?

Well, if you score sneak attack of opportunity then it would change. Should be also a bit easier than in 2014, but yeah, that's not reliable and there must be lots of teamwork.

Yeah, Rogue is better than 2014 tho it still pains me we didn't get more goodies. My biggest complains are probably the subclass progresion (waiting till 9th level for 2nd subclass feature is a joke) and quite disappointing 11th level ability (using 2 cunning strike options can be usefull, but its way too weak compared to features others get at this level).

I asked around, people think the assassin is the weakest sub, according to my calculations it never goes below 30% above baseline, if you ignore lv2, 63% above is the lowest point
