Love the video.

The rules allow for anything you want to do as a DM, but to my knowledge, the DM rolling player ability checks secretely is not covered in the rules.

Thanks Chris. Useful video. A question (sorry if you answered this and I missed it). Do you, or do the rules allow, for me as DM to secretly use the players abilities to make checks for them, without them knowing? Not just use passive scores. For example, I often make perception checks for my players without them knowing (roll20 macro) to make decisions about whether they notice an enemy hiding. I don’t want to ask players to do it, as they cannot help but meta game. I hate using passive perception, because it is a fixed score. That means low perception PCs pretty much always suffer surprise against them, with no chance to get a bit of dice luck, roll a 20 and notice something they don’t usually spot. (While at the same time, the perception expert can roll a 1 and fail to spot the creature who got a 16 on their stealth check). I guess my approach turns it into an opposed ability check. I’m sad to see they are being removed from the game. I like the drama and unpredictably of a roll-off and in my experience, so do players.
