Cone Spells

Cone spells are probably the hardest spell shape to really know who is affected and who isn't when you cast them. I go through how cones work under the rules, and hopefully will help answer who gets hit.

Same group for 5+ years - when we playin in person with a grid map, it still went pretty quick between player and DM, usually with player asking DM if they were in agreement on area of effect. Playing online if there was a terrain it was easy to line up using an arrow tool. Now we use mostly theater of the mind and sometimes that challenges people in understanding positioning of their PC to everyone else. It’s been falling on whichever of us is the DM to describe scenarios more clearly. And spend time answering questions about it. Usually with a ‘can I hit or what are the most enemies that I can hit’ type questions. We rarely have to nitpick feet and angles. A standard saying is ‘this is a non-Euclidean universe.’

Given that cones are 3D but represented as 2D on the tabletop I really wonder if there was any good reason to have that be a shape for blast spells. “They were that way in earlier editions “ seems like “We always did it that way” (lack of) thinking. This reminds me of the people who think telescoping antennae bases are somehow mandatory for Aerial war games. Complicated < Complex < Subtle value for representations.
