Surprise in D&D

I team up with Pack Tactics to discuss how the rules for surprise work in D&D

Surprise in D&D

Comments

Much harder to get surprise today than in 1974.

Glenn Wilson

In the case of surprise specifically, "the DM compares the Dexterity (Stealth) checks of anyone hiding with the passive Wisdom (Perception) score of each creature on the opposing side."

Hey! I'm not certain the example given is entirely accurate. If the entire party is sneaking up on the enemy, isn't that a group stealth check? (phb 175) If it is, all of the enemy are surprised because more than half the group succeeded on their check. Am I missing something?
