I discuss the changes made to how races will be presented in the future of D&D, and what this might mean for the future of the game.

I’m a product/UX designer by trade. The ‘optional’ rules introduced in TCoE and these tied to race remind me of bloatware. While there might be a good reason to introduce a feature, if it doesn’t fit seamlessly into the existing system/patterns, it detracts from the experience of the whole, a decision that is never worth it, regardless of the reasons. In my opinion, the game designers have introduced a layer of complexity that they cannot walk back from, a set of features that don’t work well in the existing system. It’s now broken. You can see this break. Just look at what the designers had to do to implement these new options on dndbeyond. The experience sucks. I agree with you, Chris - this points to the need for a new version, whether that’s a 5.5E/6E or PHB 2.0 - so that the game can get back to being experienced as a unified whole.
