80s Coming of Age Poll

Oh, oh, wax on, wax off

"The Karate Kid" is pretty good even though it's extremely predictable. Pat Morita helps this film rise above mediocrity. His portrayal of the old mentor is quite good. Ralph Macchio was never much of an actor and this is typical of his work. Beware of this 'gotta watch all the sequels' thing that pops up every time this movie gets mentioned. None of them are as good as the original, and the original is just a bit of light entertainment. I can't recommend any of the sequels. "Fast Times" is probably the best of these. The script is a bit light, so entertainment leans quite a bit on the performers. Fortunately there's a lot of acting talent in the movie. I watched "The Outsiders" a long time ago and all I can remember is it didn't really compare well with the book. That was very long ago so maybe I would revise my opinion if I watched it again. "Footloose" never appealed to me. The music was not at all my kind of music and the dancing was not at all my kind of dancing.

Ignore the haters of karate kid and cobra kai.. (or at least at the one loud one).. you will both enjoy the entire trilogy and the series..

Since you guys are entering the Karate Kid universe, you should watch Karate Kid Part 2 and 3 which then leads to a show called Cobra Kai that takes place 30 years later after part 3. Cobra Kai is a good show and a really good continuation after the three Karate Kid movies

Sam Ibrahim

Fully agree Karate Kid should be a one and done.

Seeing as you have already reacted to pretty much THE 80's coming of age movie The Breakfast Club and Fast Times while great is more of a late 70's theme..... It's a tough one, Karate Kid and Footloose were bigger hits BUT The Outsiders has almost ALL the massive 80's movie stars at their beginning.

Scott Lindsey

I changed my vote from Karate Kid to Fast Times b/c I am so fearful that Karate Kid winning would lead to an auto-reaction to KK2 and KK3. Sorry for being repetitive.

Clay F

It looks like the Karate Kid is going to walk away with this, but I REALLY hope you get to Fast Times at Ridgemont High at some point. Hugely funny movie, with a cast that is basically an endless stream of surprises, from the stars to tiny cameos.
