This is it... the last episode. I can't believe we're already here... but what a fun ride it's been! Still can't thank you all enough for voting for us to watch this show... definitely one of our all time favorites now. And we still have Serenity the movie to watch, which we'll release here on Patreon next Monday the 13th!
Oh damn, that's crazy! I don't know what the Fox execs were smoking at the time but it sure as hell was a bad batch.

Thinking about the opening with River: Simon said after the hospital that the tests the alliance performed on River made it to where "she feels everything, she can't not." Simon was reminiscing with Kaylee about college days where he was going to be a rich and preeminent doctor. River could see that deep inside there is a part of him that laments not having that now. She see's Jayne talking crass with Shepherd and feels him say, "I got stupid, the money's too good." The last thing Jayne begged before Mal was going to space him was to not tell the crew what he'd done. River feels Shepher say, "I don't give half a hump if you're innocent or not." We know Shepherd knows a lot about criminality. He knows a lot about firing weapons in combat. We know when the alliance saw his credentials they agreed to fix him no questions asked. He must have a pretty radical past. I figure he has a lot to atone for and picked up the good book to atone. Then there's Wash and Zoey being intimate. Maybe they have clean consciences. Maybe they were in the moment. But River was....well...able to feel that, too, so
she hurries away. Then she finds Inara and Mal. Inara is thanking Mal for not telling the crew that she plans on leaving. River hears "I'm a big girl, just tell me." That one I feel less certain about but maybe she's thinking that if Mal would be straight with his feelings about her she'd stay. Or maybe she wants Mal to open up about his issues or trauma. Then River hears Mal say, "None of it means a damn thing." Mal gave up his faith after the war and is reckless. I think he has unresolved trauma from everything/everyone he lost and can't accept the idea of letting Inara close fearing it's just more to lose. (But I thought River was a spaceship so this may all be nonsense.) :]

Things are unresolved because this wasn't written as a series finale. They were still writing the last 5-7 episodes for the first season when they were canceled. Joss had a rough outline of what he wanted to do, but never got the chance to do it because of the surprise early cancellation. Some of these last few episodes ("Trash", "Heart of Gold", "The Message") weren't even aired in the show's initial run (the cast all found out about the cancellation during the filming of "The Message") - that's how abrupt the cancellation was.

This is probably the weirdest "final" episode in a canceled series ever, and that includes unresolved cliffhangers LOL But River is the GOAT for real, and leaving the bounty hunter stranded is so dark but so deserved. Probably deserved worse, honestly.
