Tremors - Patreon Version

Howdy Partners!
We've got cowboys and monsters here for ya. This movie was soooo much fun! Thank you everyone for voting for us to watch it, what a hoot ❤️❤️❤️ Hopefully you have as good a time as we did watching. I'm starting to think we both really love cowboy movies and TV... between this and Firefly we're totally sold. Which makes me think we should have a cowboy/western movie poll one of these days!

Oh wow, that Rambaldi story is wild!

Chandra

Anything mentioned is just riding that really cool space between cute and disgusting, to be sure. The puppet for Alien, which both of you really seemed into, was done by a guy named Carlo Rambaldi based on Giger's designs; this guy was one of the best creators in this space and won Academy Awards for Alien and ET. And anything expressely mentioned was more like those things than not. But, uh, Rimbaldi also did some...other stuff for the sake of art that would be filed into that 'sicko' category -- his most mainstream/famous "extreme" work probably being Possession which came out in '81 between Alien and ET. No spoilers, but that's lite-fare compared to some of his most infamous puppet work: "For A Lizard In A Woman’s Skin (1971), Rambaldi created vivid scenes of dog mutilation so realistic that Fulci was prosecuted for offences relating to animal cruelty. Fulci was facing a two-year prison sentence until Rambaldi showcased his creations to a court proving no animal was harmed during the making of the production. It is the first case of a special effects artist legally proving his work is not “real”. " The stuff I'm alluding to would be in that vein, not things you'd immediately consider to be 'puppets' if that makes sense. Puppet simulations of things so foul it'd be almost impossible to film and still be photorealistic. But we had a theater or two that would play a lot of the Italo-horror and exploitation films around here so I was exposed to it as a youngin', as well as other schlock-y/grindhouse/b-movie type stuff before it closed down in the early 2000s unfortunately. One more rec that is puppet adjacent that you two may be into: Mad God (2021). Stop motion produced over a period of 20+ years by one of the most prolific guys in the effects space of the industry (Phil Tippett). This is one that you have to be in the mood for before ya watch it since it is a bit out there and adventurous in some of the production decisions. But you've probably seen dozens of movies that feature his work and loved the hell out of it.

You're most welcome!

I believe it! It looked like it would have been super fun to film.

Chandra

You know, I've always wanted to be a writer. One day I'd love to create a graphic novel... But for now I will guess what's going to happen in movies instead! hahaha

Chandra

Ooo more monster movies yes! Thank you!

Chandra

Thank you for all of these puppet movie recommendations! I know we asked for non cute puppets, but now I'm feeling too scared to watch them hahaha

Chandra

Fun fact: Kevin Bacon really didn't want to make this movie initially, but basically was contractually obligated and couldn't get out of it. By the time filming wrapped, he said it was the most fun he's ever had filming a movie.

tremers is not a horror it is a PG 13 how can anything being pg13 be a horror btw the body count for this film is HUMAN 10 MONSTERS 4 glad you loved it is one of my fav films of all time

Jordan, if it was Tuesday when you recorded this, then you should've been thinking about Thursday. You see, you plan ahead, that way, you don't do anything right now. Earl explained it in the movie. I knew you two would like "Tremors." It's fun. And, tbh, is a nice contrast with "The Mist." You had one movie where monsters showed up and the town almost immediately turned on each other, leading to a tragic ending. Then you followed it up with a movie where monsters showed up and the town worked together to defeat the monsters and had a happy ending. Nice bookends. Also, I've said it before but Chandra needs to write movies or something bc her ability to predict what characters are going to do and say in pretty much every movie is legit uncanny.

Jordan took the words right out of my mouth. This movie is just plain fun. Perfect length and pace, the story isn't overly complicated, and the characters are exactly who you expect them to be in a film like this. The buddy chemistry between Fred Ward and Kevin Bacon is one of the most natural I have ever seen on screen. All time great casting with those two. Now bring on those Western films! Monster movie suggestions - King Kong (2005 remake) - Godzilla Minus One - Swamp Thing - Monster Squad - Gremlins 2

Hell yeah, glad you ended up liking the flick. One of the last love letters to practical effects in the golden age of it -- the ground deformations with carpet, all of the miniature stuff with the rec room wall (wall of guns), and the gags they built for the unseen stuff like the jackhammer. So good. Think I may be losing my mind, but I can't remember if you two called out Mindy being the older sister from Jurassic Park but that was definitely her. Actually scary puppeted stuff, though? It's hard because there are only so many that actually hold up and you two have seen/reacted to some of the bigger ones (The Thing, Alien(s), Big Trouble in Little China, Jaws, now Tremors, etc). You might check out In the Mouth of Madness which is also from Carpentor, Terrorvision from the 80s if you're in the mood for a budget flick, can't remember if you two have done the 80s Fly remake with Cronenberg but that's also good, Gremlins for Christmas, and...there's some stuff out there with puppets and animatronics that is absolutely fantastic for horror or otherwise but I'm not sure they'd be your speed (actually disgusting things shown on screen that you can't tell from the real thing in some cases). I'm pretty sure the last bit isn't what you were looking for, but if it is I'm sure some of us sickos can point you in the right direction there. However, for your consideration on the puppet front: Farscape. It's a series from the 90s, it's American/Australian weirdness from the golden age of the scifi channel in the US, insane original score/audio design, and Jim Henson's company was heavily involved creating puppets for nearly every episode (two of the main characters are photorealistic puppets) -- some of which are pretty hard to look at if you're into it. From the guy that created Seaquest DSV before that and took his frustrations from network television executives out on an unsuspecting audience in each and every episode of Farscape. Weird, strange, manic, and just outright all over the place wrt everything but quality. Considered a hallmark of the genre, like Firefly as they aired during the same time and were trying for similar target demos.
