Oh, wow, I didn't know any of that either. I guess I was lucky enough to have missed the show when it originally aired. It was one I'd heard about from someone but I didn't really know what kind of show it was and never had the time or interest to find out. It wasn't until years later, after hearing about how much the fans loved it and willed the movie into being, that I finally decided to check it out (plus, I always like Nathan Fillion in pretty much everything). I ended up really loving the show and being sad that it was cancelled so early, though I did appreciate the fact that they managed to wrap it up decently with the movie; so many other shows just end and the creators walk away, leaving it all hanging.

Oh wow, this is all so wild. It sounds like the show just got incredibly mismanaged. That sucks so much for the actors and crew that worked on it!

I can't believe you had to wait for the dvds to see the last episodes! AND they didn't air the pilot! Yeesh, they made a lot of interesting choices haha

Chandra

Yes! The cast is sooooo fun

Chandra

I love this cast so much. Firefly is one of my favorite shows and Nathan Fillion one of ny favorite people in general.

Nathan Jasper, the Artist Formerly Known as Primary

Oh wow, yeah that's way worse than we thought!

No spoilers below - The main reason the show didn't get good viewer numbers on TV is not because people didn't like it - it's because FOX aired the episodes OUT OF ORDER. So people literally watched what FOX decided was the most "exciting" episodes first to grab people, but all it did was drop you confusingly in the middle of the series, then continue to release the "interesting" episodes first, with no rhyme or reason or continuity between each show. The release order of the eposides was ep2, ep3, ep6, ep7, ep8, ep4, ep5, ep9, ep10, ep14(the one they shot last), ep1(premiere, which you just watched). Yes, this premiere was aired AFTER THEY CANCELLED THE SHOW. With eps 11/12/13 completely unaired in the US. Yikes. As Thomas Yanez says in their comment - the show didn't just *not get renewed for a second season*, it was literally cancelled mid season 1, while they were still filming episodes, as a result of the poor first few weeks. They never filmed the 15th-20th episodes at all, as the cast found out about the cancellation while filming episode ~13. The movie exists through sheer force of will from the fans and the cast who all loved this show and each other. The movie was created in an attempt to more cleanly tie off storylines, while still trying to be able to stand on its own for the people who never saw the show. BUT - don't be discouraged! I can't emphasize enough how I'd love to be able to experience this show again for the first time. Which is why its such a popular reaction request. It's worth it! (And so is chernobyl, looking forward to that too!)

Welcome to Firefly, the best show that was never given a real chance by the Fox network. After they cancelled Firefly I would never watch another show on Fox, my own personal boycott. They didn't even air the last couple of episodes that were already made so we had to wait for the DVD release to see those. I'm so happy you are watching this and even happier you love it already. Can't wait for you to watch the next episode which is the first one they aired because they decided that Serenity was to intellectual for people to understand. Yeah I don't get it either lol.

Yaaaaaayyy!

Believe it or not, among the ways the network messed with this show, they actually didn't like this episode as the pilot, and they made Joss Whedon rewrite the next episode "The Train Job" to add exposition to allow it to serve as a pilot. This episode aired later in the season. Somebody at Fox REALLY had it in for Joss or the show before it even had a chance.

"There is only one season and it was canceled..." It's worse than that. They hadn't even finished writing the rest of the first season, much less filming it, when it was canceled. Back then, after his success with Buffy and Angel, Joss Whedon expected this show to do the normal-for-the-time 20+ episodes per season for a few seasons. So, when it was canceled halfway through the first season (after much shenanigans where episodes were pre-empted and/or shown out of order), they were still in the process of making episodes and expanding outlines into full episode scripts. So, yeah. Thankfully we got the movie to provide some badly needed closure.
