Fuzzy sweater behind the scenes

This is a quick breakdown of how I did the fuzzy sweater that Lucy was wearing under the stinky bridge! :D

I started with painting a simple smoothly shaded version of the sweater. I kept the values relatively close together and painted them a bit darker in the occlusion zones (areas that are in close proximity to each other).

After that I applied a wave filter to create sort of a starting point to paint the fuzzy outlines. Then I used a small ellipse brush to paint over the waves till they did not look like waves any more. When it comes to repetitive shapes and textures I always focus on making them appear random within their confines. This makes it look more natural. If I had just left the wavy outlines it would have looked super artificial because the shapes repeated in an almost predictably mechanical manner.

In order to make the sweater look more fuzzy I used one of Krita’s countless filter G’MIC-Qt filters. These are a massive collection of all sorts of destructive filters. Which means that once they are applied they can not be undone (as opposed to filter masks for example).

I made a copy of my sweater layer, applied the “Brushify” filter with the fuzziness parameter set high and clipped the resulting layer onto the original one. Then I reduced the layer opacity of the brushified layer to 25%.

Then I just added a low opacity black multiply layer just to darken the whole sweater and added some additional details.

That was me art nerding about fuzziness! :V
