Behind the scenes Bath Fox

Here is how I did the foam in the recent Bath Fox Piece. :D

First I painted in the general shapes of the foam.
I tried to keep the shapes varied without creating visual chaos and put most of them on Lucy's left butt cheek. If they were evenly distributed over the two cheeks it would've looked a bit too symmetrical and artificial. I kept the shapes relatively opaque, except for the parts that touch the skin, I made those a bit more transparent.

In order to add the bubbles I used the good old transparency layer. (attaches to regular layers, black parts hide the layer beneath, white parts show the layer beneath)
The cool thing about transparency layers is that you can achieve all sorts of neat effects by filling them with patterns. I chose one that looked a bit bubbly, reduced the scale and filled the transparency layer with it to create some base-level of bubbly details. After that I manually painted in black dots where I wanted bubbles to be. :>

In case you are wondering, the transparency mask only affects the pixels of the layer it is attached to. If you look at the mask you can see that the pattern fills out the whole thing, but it only applies it to the foamy shapes I painted!

That was me art-nerding. :D

Transparency layers are a trusty work horse of mine. I also used them in the comic I posted today to contain the content of the little panels. :D Also Mr. Duck is slowly becoming a recurring character. 👀

I keep flicking back and forth between these images and am amazed just how much that transparency layer brings the bubbles to life. I love it when you talk shop like this. It's interesting and edifying. I've had access to these masks and adjustment layers for decades and never thought to play with them. Gonna have to do a lil experimenting! ...Oh and totally Mr. Duck again, just chillin' and enjoying the view. 🍆🪿

These are great little insights into process, even if I don’t understand any of it. Thanks.
