If my last story wasn't quite as dark as I had originally planned/expected it to be, this one may be one of the darkest I've written. And not 'playfully dark,' either. That being the case, I want to warn upfront that this story won't be for everyone and you may not enjoy it, especially if you are sensitive to dark/sad content. I don't want to give away too much, but I also don't want people to go into it unprepared. There are also multiple endings, though they range from dark, darker, and darkest. Links to the variations are in the story ahead of the scene where the stories depart.

For those who understandably pass on this one, I am planning on doing at least one more short story still this month that will be more generally palatable.
