So essentially, I was putting into practice a couple different things I'd seen or heard pro artists do.

Every once in awhile I've heard of people getting all the shading out of the way before doing any color. I think that, for what I want to accomplish, it's a useful change in process, because a lot of the lighting tricks I already use don't really require color already laid down. That, and, some particularly light or dark colors can interfere with the process, and it sure saved a lot of time flipping layers on and off when it came to Avus's tum. And it was pretty satisfying to drop some basic color in and watch my own art come to life... :,)

The other technique is in the version of the sketch that has all the lines through it. I was watching one of Corel's webinars from months back, about shading anime hair. The dude presenting basically traced the lines on the hair's volume as a way to help visualize its form and how it would catch light from different sources. Anyway, I figured I'd apply it to his entire body! It, sort of worked, but I think that his form is a bit too simple for it to have made a massive difference. I don't have any images of the inbetween stages of gridded --> shaded, unfortunately, I got a bit overzealous.
