The moomins definitely influenced me a lot as a kid (being a finnish kid from the 90s) but it just occurred to me that maybe they, and the language I grew up thinking with had also played a part on why I don't bother to go out of my way to make the foxes explicitly gendered. I didn't grow up thinking that it's necessarily a vital component to who someone is as a person.
(also, fun fact: The creator of the Moomins, Tove Jansson, based Too-Ticky on the second panel on her lover Tuulikki Pietilä, with whom she lived happily ever after for 45 years!
