I've planted old potatoes in large plastic sacks before (you start about half way down (depending on depth), and add soil as shoots start to appear. You can do it in autumn for a crop of new potatoes in winter!

Mom used to sprout potato eyes and Granny would plant them in her garden. I don't remember them ever harvesting them though.

LOL. I found a partial bag of potatoes sprouting under my kitchen sink. I grabbed the smallest, one and stuck it in a pot with some soil and watered it, and now I have a thriving and surprisingly tall potato plant in my garage. Hoping to plant it proper this weekend after failing to do so last week.
