In finnish, the word is hiidenkirnu, ”ghoul’s butter churn”. In the original meaning, hiisi has been the name of a holy place or a burial ground, but later the name’s meaning shifted to mean a great, frightening, troll-like creature that is hostile to humans.
The swedish name, jättegryta, refers to not simply any giant, but specifically to jötunn, the frost giants of viking lore.
