The smell

Based on a real incident, although he recognised the smell before finding the source: my library book’s binding smelled like formic acid.

The finnish word for formic acid is ”acid from ants/acid of the ants”, and we took like 35 minutes before I could get him to accept that in english, ”ant-acid” just means ”anti-acid” and has nothing to do with ants. He still thinks that’s rather stupid.

Same meaning in English, via Latin. Formic comes from Latin for ant. And now that you've pointed it out, I can't unsee how weird antacid is. So, thanks?
