Why Are People Stopping to Turn?

Why Are People Stopping to Turn? Why Are People Stopping to Turn?

Comments

i haven't noticed this myself, so i presume this means i'm part of the problem - i don't think i slow down too much, but there are definitely times i have to take a turn reeeeeal slow because the join between the road and the driveway/parking lot/sloped portion of sidewalk/whatever is steep or uneven and if I don't, i'll scrape the bottom of the car (and it's not like i'm driving a low-slung sports car, it's a hyundai hybrid sedan over here) but generally, i'm just moving at a normal pace, even on the turn

I think a not insignificant portion of this epidemic is drivers who are not confident in their driving ability and/or their car's capability. It's the drivers that see cars as an appliance and driving as a necessity. The ones who are beholden to their fears of driving and the risks associated with it. Larger vehicles and driver assistance tech certainly play into it, but I think it's primarily that fear.

It's timidity. There are simply a lot of timid drivers out there who don't trust their skills, don't trust their tires, don't trust their car or any combination thereof. I've tried to take note of which drivers aren't making crisp turns, but its not easy to make out the driver as they turn ahead of you (unlike a timid driver that you might wind up passing). In general the worst offenders in terms of vehicle type has been minivans so it could be parents being extra safe. For timid drivers in general I've seen all types, but the plurality are a combination of older drivers (ie baby boomers) who are likely less sure of their driving abilities, and immigrants who may have not grown up driving or are terrified about getting into an accident. I recall that my mom, who was a very assertive driver for most of her life, slowed down dramatically after age 65 and wound up doing the same things she used to yell at people for. Probably a cautionary tale about how age catches up with all of us.

I agree with most of the time, but too slow can also create a hazard. It's the difference in speeds that causes accidents.

I take left hand turns more slowly now. Here's why: 1. the A-pillars. I turned right in front a lady one time; 2. more stopped moving and delivery trucks. Amazon, Uber eats stop all the time. 3. the E-bikes and scooters are too fast and people are reckless on those things. I need to prepare for the worst.

Come to Phoenix where a crap-ton of people don't ever move up to get in the intersection to allow the car behind them to move up behind them and make the turn. Jesus, even the Waymos here move up.

I'm not sure that a lot of people actually think about driving at all. From the ones who left-foot brake, hovering their foot over the pedal so that the lights flash at the slightest bump to the ones who weave and race through traffic to arrive at the red light seconds before people they just passed, it seems like many drivers don't have a connection between action and effect. I haven't noticed a lot of the slow turning thing in Arizona, but we are known for a lot of bad drivers in large part due to the snowbirds. In response, I consciously go to chill mode: I put on music that I like, let anyone get in front of me, wait at the red light, etc. I just shake my head at the dumbasses and get where I'm going within a few minutes regardless.

I will take slow driver over aggresive driver any day of the week

Capability. They were never taught to drive. Also stiff suspension. My pet hate is them going across two lanes to turn left into a driveway (RHD country obviously).
