What do you think about "free roam"?

Free roam, in other words, completing tasks — tasks that may be trivial like talking to a person, etc. or more complicated - talk to this person, go there, do
something, collect some objects, return to the person you talked to, etc. They can be even more complex, based on events and so on.
My question to you is this:
What do you think about including a "free roam" in any AVN?
