As far as I've ever heard, Larson didn't have any money backing him. He waited tables and wrote songs for ads and smaller theater productions to scrape enough cash together for bills so that he could work on his musical. My guess is that it's more about how different times are now than in the 80s and early 90s. IRL he got his first agent thanks to Sondheim, who was mentoring him because Larson wrote him a letter and Sondheim thought his work sounded interesting. Plus he'd been working/writing music and getting to know people in the scene for almost a decade at the point of the story here, so he had connections in that way.
