Post-MAGFest Update! Getting Back on Track.

Hey guys! I hope you all enjoyed the Amazon Trail II video! I uploaded it while I was away in NYC, so I wasn't able to check feedback as much as I usually do. I took some fan feedback while making that episode, so hopefully that's apparent and also a good thing! January is well known as a low CPM month, so I'm not super upset that my video output took a hit, but I'm ready to get back on track and start uploading more. I'm currently working on a Top 5 which should be out this coming Saturday, and I've already got some good ideas for what I want to do in the coming weeks for videos. First, though, I need to catch up on Patreon stuff, most importantly the thank you videos. Anyone worrying that I forgot about them, please relax! Messages are in-bound, it's in my schedule, it's getting done! Unfortunately, this is highlighting a problem I seem to have more often than not with Patreon. I feel like I'm falling behind on getting this stuff done more and more (especially now that I'm uploading more often), and I feel bad since you guys are being so generous! Some time this month I'm going to be re-thinking my Patreon strategy, so I'd love to hear back from you as to why it is exactly that you donate. Is it more to support my channel, or is it more for the Patreon perks that I offer? Is there anything I should be doing better? Something I should/shouldn't be offering? Please let me know! As for now, I need to get back to work on my current video. The Top 5 I'm currently working on is of my most anticipated games of 2015. What games are you guys looking forward to? Any guess as to what's going to be on my list?

How many of those three do you actually think are on my list? Based on what you know about me.

Hey, thanks for letting me know how you feel! I think I have a feel for what I'm going to change, and the hangout/skype call thing is one of the ideas I've been pondering for a little while. It would be more time, but overall I think it would be less effort and maybe even more fun than just a video of me talking at you. I'd probably do it individually, though, not in a group. Too many timing issues to try and work out if it all had to be done at once...

Thanks for the feedback, Austin! I'm glad you like the monthly videos that I've been doing. But how would you feel if I replaced that with, like, a 30 minute Skype call? Would that be better, you think? Worse? I think it would actually be easier for me to do, but I'm wondering if that would be better or worse to offer.

It's both, to an extent. When people are looking at your Patreon, rewards at higher tiers do tend to inspire more donations, but when it comes to continuing to donate, rewards don't enter my mind at all. When I see a new video, I just think, "Wow, I'm glad I donated. I'm helping to make this awesome stuff come out more." Yeah, it would be cool to have some perks, the videos at the end of the month are something I appreciated so much more than I ever thought I would, and seeing my name in the credits puts a smile on my face, but it's not like I'm clamoring for awesome stuff. It's just...well, a nice little perk. It's the icing on the cake more than anything. When it comes to rewards, I'm firmly in the, "Something fun for the creator and the audience" camp. Things like that tend not to slip from the mind of content creators because they love doing them. Schedules don't always allow for this, and it isn't a given, but that's a trend I've seen. A close second, however, is non-intrusive rewards, things that creators don't have to put much work into, but are things that people want. I don't...honestly know what you'd do, though.

It’s a little of both for me, I think. I am happy to support your work, but I’d be lying if I said that the Patreon bonuses aren’t a huge incentive towards donating, especially for the big amounts. I would probably still donate $5 bucks per video if you did away with them, as that feels more like I’m supporting your work than paying an optional subscription service with monthly payments regardless of output. As for suggestions, Yungtown has a reward where he does a one on one Skype hangout with a patron, and Caddicarus (I think) has a recurring patrons-only chat at certain pledge levels. Maybe doing something like that or a patron-only monthly stream might be an idea? I could see one of those being a less time-consuming option in lieu of thank you videos. Of course, a monthly group chat/stream might not work as well with your payment schedule, and you might not be comfortable doing the one-on-one stuff.

Gee I have lots of games I would put on that list... Bloodborne, MGS V, Persona 5 (if it does come out this year)... And if any of those aren't on your list Ian, well, I might have to write a very mean comment on your video. I mean, you should have the SAME opinion as me after all.
