The excessive and prolonged use of antidepressants, especially selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), may lead to serotonin syndrome, also called - serotonin toxicity (the excess of serotonin). Serotonin syndrome manifests itself by diverse adverse effects: metabolic disorders, sexual dysfunctions, social anxiety, fear, confusion, restlessness, irritability, diarrhea, feeling of boredom, muscle rigidity, or loss of muscle coordination.
TPH is an enzyme responsible for serotonin synthesis. Therefore, its inhibition will lead directly to overall reduced serotonin release.
