ABOUT A GIRL

Comments

I don't remember exactly how I felt when I saw this episode the first time. Right now though I'm thinking adversity and maybe extreme adversity will bring out the best in people, or rather those who went through adversity becomes something more, something much more than normal people. But if a person is different and they are accepted by society then it's not the same thing, it isn't that radical adversity that someone who had to live in solitude in the mountains had to face and to live through. Yes I think you wouldn't want to wish that on anyone... but... for those willing to walk that path, they can be much more... probably. I think normal parents though would want a normal child. I think it takes a lot to change one's whole life around... to give their child a life... of meaning. I hope you've seen Man of Steel because that's mom and pop right there.

The tribunal's ultimate decision is sad but it makes sense. The Moclans weren't going to alter their culture over this.

There are lots of sci-fi variations on gender. In Larry Niven's "Known Space" series, the Kzinti species has males and females, but only the males evolved intelligence. The females aren't much smarter than chimpanzees.

The circumcision argument is actually pretty cogent.

The idea that Bortis getting beaten up by Alara teaches him anything about the value of females was kind of stupid. Her home planet's very high gravity makes her vastly stronger than anyone on the ship and her ability to beat Bortis was a foregone conclusion that proves nothing.

Very tricky episode. Maybe rather than a cleft palate or a third leg, a better example would be the practice of some cultures to perform clitorectomies on young girls specifically to prevent them from ever feeling sexual pleasure. In those cultures that's seen as the right thing to do. And as much as I want to respect other cultures...that horrifies me and I want that savage practice wiped from the Earth.

A lot of issues here. The Moclans have the tech now to cross two males to produce offspring, but that certainly wasn't always the case. They must have had a more 50/50 mix once upon a time. So what drove the decision to eliminate females entirely? It reminds me of China's one child per couple policy (abandoned now as the Chinese face demographic collapse). Because their culture favors sons female fetuses were frequently aborted. The result was a huge surplus of males that have zero chance of finding a Chinese wife. That's a disaster in a xenophobic culture like China where foreign brides aren't an option.
