On the other hand, back in the day there were probably a greater percentage of sailors who couldn't even speak the language of command (depending on the navy). So allowances would have had to be made.

As someone who grew up in the old school disciplinary tradition, if you were on what we today would call the spectrum and in the navy (or military in general) of the day, then I can tell you that just like left-handed persons back then you would’ve been “corrected” depending on your behavior
