RE: Your speculation about an invasion of the German north during the Great War is a prime example of why you are best sticking to naval matters. The BASIC reality of the Great War on land was that it is easier and faster to move troops by rail than by foot or even truck. The Germans could have easily have massed troops to oppose an enemy landing in the north before it could have gotten very far. So the main effect of an attack like this would be to divert troops away from the other fronts where they might be needed. The Anzio campaign during WW2 is a perfect example of this.

The German troops invading New York City would have their work cut out for them. The Bronx is the only Borough of NYC that isn’t on an island. Trying to cross The Hudson or The East River under artillery and machine gun fire would be a nightmare. The southern tip of Manhattan is called The Battery for a reason. They would be better off invading Connecticut and trying to cut the city off from the north.
