Potential Alternate Intro's - The Poll

Please read the previous post first, then vote :)

Option 1 reminds me of traditional documentaries and option 5 sounds like a modern world of warships style intro. Both sound very cool.

Amen.

I say "screw 'em." If they sue in Turkish court, just avoid that country on your trips. If they sue in English courts - good luck explaining away your other permissions well enough to get a settlement. And how did a Turkish company get the world-wide exclusive rights to a tune that the composers say is free to use??? But don't ask me - ask the Nigerian prince who is willing to give me 20% of his US holdings if I just send him $1500 today to expedite. Maybe he can explain their assertion of rights.

John K Baker

I voted #5 as first option, but #1 also feels like a close contender.

Andrei DESCULŢ

I always liked the score from "Victory at Sea".

David S. Speaks

4 or 5

frank bodenschatz

I like #3, it sounds like its from the soundtrack to Rocky. Which may not be great, given copyright claim BS. I also like #1, it has an epic sort of feel to it.

kraF1

I like the intro length. Gets a good variety of ships in there without being tedious. Presumably you can add back in the reports from the guns.

What purposes do you hope the intro serves for repeat visitors? for new visitors? One of my favorite channels has an intro that lasts 7-10 seconds and it does the job.

Steve Ehrmann

Thanks for asking! I preferred #1 because the sea, or even the Navies, are not all boom boom boom the whole time. More strongly, I would urge you to cut the time in the intro by at least 50%. I choose which programs to listen to by how brief, efficient, and effective that channel has been. The long intro serves no purpose that I can see.

Steve Ehrmann

I agree with Ferrous. The fifth track is the one that best captures the naval spirit of your images and goes particularly well with the firing of the naval guns.

#1 is good, but it starts off too quiet. #2 starts off with more volume right away, and thus is preferable. The horns in #3 don't really feel right. Nothing about #4 or #5 felt like they fit the subject matter well - I thought they felt too 'modern'.

Carl Soderstrom

I've listened to these twice I have to agree with a few people here, to be frankly honest, they aren't 100% what I'd choose. 1: I agree with Christoph there. 2: Not quite there but not too bad. 3: Nice but those Baroque horns are bit loud, would more fit a videos of the type like "The Life Story of [insert Admiral here]" than all the time. 4: Totally agree with Christoph with that one. 5: Overused "Stupidly loud movie horn" and wish it didn't exist at all. As for the audio that Camino posted, I can see where they're coming from, maybe something to look into with chatting with the musician.

Toss up between 4 and 5. I voted for 4 because it looked lonely.

John McCarthy

Track 5 if you trim the start a bit. Track 1 would be my runner up. Of course I'm partial to this one for anything that's pre steam power: https://filmmusic.io/song/7540-seven-seas

Camino John

Wagners "Ride of the Valkyries".

Capitano Lorenzo

Fifth track reminds me of something for giant monster movie. Well, time to binge on some Godzilla..ok, after I catch up on homework and listen to Wednesday Drach time.

Brian Reddeman

2 or 4 for me, 1 & 3 a bit heavy and 5 reminded me of TRON:Legacy - not sure why 😂

My impressions: 1: The beginning sounds very East Asian which doesn't seem fitting for a channel that is 80% about western ships. I really like the 2nd part of it which starts at roughly 16s. 2: A bit too percussion heavy for my taste, but alright overall. 3: Sounds like a Barock coronation anthem. Doesn't seem appropriate. 4: Feels appropriate for the WW1-WW2 era but a bit too dark. 5: My favourite overall. The beginning sounds very martial, which is apprpriate I guess and I like the switch to the triumphal melody.

Christoph Göbel

I am with Kevin as they don't do anything for me. The best I can do is say 3 is irritating to my ears. To me 1 and 3 are acceptable.

I'm not sure, I'm going to listen again, I'm not saying its bad, but three had me thinking about watching man in the Iron mask later, just 1st impression that popped in my head.

Jeff s holloway

I prefer 4 and 5 since they're quieter and the normal intro is usually louder than the video itself. 1+2 are also fine. The horns in 3 hurt my ears

Erik Van Dootingh

How do we listen to the tracks?

Two and Five have the requisite levels of brooding malevolence invoking the image of armour gliding through water to do violence.

You choose. Just get it fixed. Spend your time on things you choose

I voted 3. I like the fanfare for grand ships. 2 sounds too close to pirates of the carribean, 4 would work for subs but you cover everything. 5 is not bad. still not sure what I think of 1.

YTs options seem a bit limited. If you don't already have something in mind there is a channel I've come across that might have something you could use for new videos: https://www.youtube.com/@SoundEffectsFactory

Rick Ashcroft

Ex Time Team contributor and scholar Guy de la Bédoyère uses the 1st track in many of his YT videos, especially those on Rome and Egypt.

Robert Henry Illston

I voted for 5, but didn’t object to 2; I did not care for 3 at all. I’m hoping the original composer can assert their rights and rid you of this obvious grift. I’m pleased you are getting legal representation, but am sorry you’ve had to do so.

Bob Hedges

I am unfortunately limited in replacement by whats on the YT audio library, with new videos I could use something completely different of course.

Drachinifel

None really tickled my fancy. As Ron stated, dramatic and somewhat dark. The one in the middle sounded Roman. Have you looked into old time sea chantys?

Kevin Weber

#1 for me but all maybe a bit on the dramatic side. If not #1, then #2.

#3 had me thinking of Handel, and a barge down the Thames... Which is why I voted for #2

Minion

The music is all good, but to be honest they're all a bit over-dramatic for the channel. #2 is best IMO, followed by #1.
