1870's naval sabot shot runs afoul of a number of issues. You mentioned the technical ones, the fact naval ships are large, the loss of shell mass and explosive filler causing less damage. I'd say on top of all of these is that there is no perceived need for it with expected battle ranges being 2000 yards or less.

Your trip sounds great Drach! I have seen a few of those ships, but I have not seen the USS Salem. I'm very interested to get your insight into the Des Moines class cruiser, because I have had family serve on the Newport News.

Interestingly one of the (lesser) Ike-Monty books (written by a British Author). Implied that Ike was "overawed" by Monty's charisma/antics. This made me A: giggle. and B: Doubt the man had done his proper research. Ike spent most of the Thirties as MacArthur's Chief of Staff. Monty could put on airs, but he was nothing compared to Doug.

MacArthur is a tough general to judge. Partly because he was an absolute black hole as far as credit went, and partly because he record is a mix of very skillful offensives (the landings up New Guinea, Inchon) mixed with a horrible record on defense (1st Philippines, was a fiasco somewhat redeemed because Homma didn't realize why they were abandoning Manila) and the winter counterattacks. He was apparently a very good administrator (the Japanese have had many worse Shogun), but tended to work best with those he could overawe (his political support was at congressional level, Roosevelt and Marshal tolerated him because removing him would be worse than dealing with him).

Great trip that you have planned. I hope that you will be able to create footage of the USS Cassin Young at the same time that you visit the USS Constitution. One of the best museum ships in the US, in my opinion, is the Liberty Ship SS Jeremiah O'Brien in San Francisco.

I hope Fusō wins, I absolutely LOVE the pagoda mast on her and Yamashiro. 1942 IJN Fusō vs 1941 KMS Bismarck Assumptions: Engagement at 20,000 yards until destruction Clear skies, smooth seas Fusō has had her 1937-1941 improvements to her armor, machinery, superstructure and pagoda mast. Also recognizing that after the first salvo, Bismarck knocks out her own forward radar. Outcome?
