Drach - Circa 1870 steel could be produced, albeit expensively. Say in 1870 or so we had a 6” cannon. Hypothetically, could an under-bore all steel pointy round, using a sabot for centering be made using the technology of the day? Fired from a smoothbore cannon the projectile could be fin stabilized if desired. If this were possible, wouldn’t the all steel sabot round have: A much higher velocity by virtue of its smaller weight Have superior penetrative capability Finally, assuming the sabot round was able to penetrate the armor of the day, would the higher kinetic energy upon penetration have significant deleterious effects on the receiving crew/ship? Would it not be a viable option?
