SPN: The Battle of the Ligurian Sea
Q&A: What Naval Battle do you find the most frustrating/annoying?

Q&A: If the King George Vs had been fitted with the 16 inch guns (3x3) intended for the Lions, what impact could this have had on the engagements the KGVs were involved in?

Q and A: In discussion with someone regarding the British ability to produce an 18" gun had world war 2 not broken out, the Lions been built and then another class followed them. as far as I can see the 18" gun on Furious/Lord Clive was produced by elswick armaments which ceased operations in the 1920s. However it seems Elswick was creasted (as a political device) as a division of Armstrong Whitworth which obviously continued to exist. It also looks the the Royal Gun Factory (Arsenal) and another company as well as Elswick bid to construct the 18" MK2 gun in the 1920s however I don't know if either the capability Elswick had remained in the Armstrong group by the late 1930s/1940s or whether other companies had that capability. I'm also not sure exactly what the requirements are to make an 18" gun (Why is it the longest lead time item for a battleship gun?)

Q and A: Who had the worse situation, the British with the Italians joining the war and the French fleet no longer being the counter, or, the US with the loss of the Pacific Battle Fleet?

Q&A: A question if I may, please, regarding the booms which one sees extending out of the sides of a number of larger 20thC warships. I'm not referring to the multiple booms which were hanging arms for torpedo netting (which is more prevalent in earlier 20thC warships) but the single ones seen on either or both sides of a large ship with boats attached to them (e.g. the picture of HMS Hermes in the second Hermes-related question in DD91).
Are they exactly what they appear to be, i.e. just mooring points for smaller ships/boats? If so, how do the ship's/boat's personnel get from/to the each craft when the smaller craft, or multiple crafts, are moored all along and at the extreme end of the boom? Are there ladders up to, and a walkway along, the boom or is there some less glamourous method for getting between the two?
Many thanks

Someone posted a very complimentary reply to 'Drachisms of the Day' about what I "do" . I don't 'do' anything. I'm just the stenographer. I've been steno-graphing since 4/28/19. I'm calling it a year. Today's DotD will reflect that.

Hey Drach and community of the channel,
I was wondering what all of your opinions are on the firing of Cpt. Brett Crozier; wether or not that Captain Crozier’s actions can be justifiable in preserving the safety and combat capability of his ship and his crew.

Very excited to hear you mention the Golden Hinde. I crewed on her during the mid 80s. At the time she was visiting the west coast of the United States.
