Godot Experiments

Hello Supporters!

Last week I  got roped into an interesting experiment that required rudimentary  knowledge of Godot, the open source game engine that I keep hearing so  much about. I literally knew nothing about Godot's inner workings and  had no real reason to use it for future projects, but seeing just how  quickly ecosystems can change, I thought this was a good opportunity to  jump in and take a peek.

The result is this cute little project  I'd like to call Jay's Rad Rocket Game! I've followed a tutorial by  Bramwell Williams that happened to land in my inbox, available from Gamedev.tv for a mere $10.  I'm glad I did, as the concepts of how Godot thinks isn't something I  could have worked out by myself. Now that I know the basics, I may  expand this into a demo with UI and more levels. It'll depend on how  much time I can find, but if I do, you'll be the first to know.

And of course it can do character animations too!

The  reason why Godot is an interesting 3D candidate to watch is that I  believe it could be big in years to come. I feel that Godot is now what  what Blender was like 10 years ago. With the right support and  development, this project could become a valuable tool in our 3D  toolkits. We've all seen too many times how license terms of commercial  software can change over time, something that's less likely to happen  with open source projects.

In other news, I'm going to make some  significant hardware investments this week, but I'll tell you more about  this in a future post, accompanied by some pictures for a "show and  tell".

Meanwhile, on Saturday I'm doing a Daz+ stream in which  I'll attempt to build the Red Room from Twin Peaks as a vignette for Daz  Studio! I'll use Blender to create the models, texture them in  Substance Painter and use Substance Sampler to create the iconic floor  pattern.

Have a great weekend 👋
