2026-03-14 23:20:15 +0000 UTCSince you are sharing Arctic Fox facts, I figure I would add to it. In Russian culture, this particular animal - Песец (pronounced "Pesec") - has very high popularity. For two reasons. One is historic tendency to wear fur hats and coats. The fur of Arctic Fox is extremely highly rated among the ladies. A fur coat or a fur hat made out of Arctic Fox is quite a big deal. The other reason for popularity is that the name of the Arctic Fox in Russian, sounds like a popular obscenity (the American equivalent would be "f*** up" - "disaster" in non-obscenity terms). So, instead of saying the obscenity, people will often use the name of Arctic Fox instead. The popular expression is that "Arctic Fox has sneaked up very stealthily". Meaning, "the disaster has come as complete surprise".
