From what I had interpreted, delves under the skin to anchor to various body parts, with some segments mounted on top or sticking thru. I'd have to go back nd read up on all descriptions to make sure, but I'm fairly certain Shiro mentioned external pieces. I was imagining it anchored to her existing musculoskeletal system, like a fucky assisted lift device, with the 'Shift' portions mounted outside for things like maintenance or fiddling since it was experimental tech. Maybe I'm way off-base, but the nomenclature does feel similar to more traditional exo-suit styled assisted lift devices. The 'next step' for science would be internally-mounted systems, no?

Huh, ya know, ive been picturing the ExoCore as essentially an exoskeleton, i guess i missed the part that described it as under the skin. In my defense, im pretty sure "exo" means external.
