Filming location for the asylum: Eastern State Penitentiary, Philadelphia. This architectural wonder, a central hub with seven โspokesโ radiating outwards, was the brainchild of the Quaker movement, a humane alternative to the corrupt, disease-ridden dumping grounds that served as prisons in the 19th century. The guiding principle was solitary confinement. With only the Bible, and no human contact whatsoever ( even meals were served through holes in the wall so the prisoner could have no contact with the guard ), the inmate, "freed from temptation, would revert to a natural state of innocence." In fact they mostly went mad. It was operational from 1829 until 1971. In Philadelphia, months before filming, Brad Pitt spent weeks at Temple University's hospital, visiting and studying the psychiatric ward to prepare for his role. In the last CCC, Monty Python came up. The director Terry Gilliam was one of them, and directed some Python films. He went on to make unique films on his own, including 12 Monkeys. Another interesting one of his is "Brazil." ๐K.
