As far as airplane development, the aerodynamics obviously didn't change that much, but at the time they were at the limits of what their engines could do. A combination of improved metallurgy and improved design would drastically improve engine capabilities, letting them build bigger aircraft. Most military cargo planes aren't that much different in design to the C-47's and C-53's that were used on D-Day, but they build them much larger with bigger payloads because the engines are stronger (they changed from radial engines to turboprops or jets) and the airframes are lighter. The planes they used carried 12 paratroops. The current workhorse that the 101st generally uses is the C-130 (Usually operated by the Air Force) which can 64 paratroops per plane, or the C-17 which is rated for 102 paratroopers per plane.

WOW! I had no idea-- I wonder if there are more rules and guidelines around that nowadays.

Not "employees" in the military. They are bound by something called the UCMJ, which are a set of laws that are specific to the military. Functionally a person in the military (especially at that time) gave up their civilian rights, and were functionally the property of the United States. Short of being murdered by a CO, officers and NCO's were given a very wide latitude for how they treat those under their command. Just like in the real world, some officers and NCO's are jerks.
