The Boogies decision #55

Part 55

Poll closes in 24 hours.

It's a giant game of Snake.

Close to the idea. Since sentinels extend from the walls, it never truly leaves its original post.

..... It can't return to its position if it's in search mode. The area it came from is open.

Ryan Drakel

There's in fact a fatal flaw to the logic of 'return to its position' in this case.

I don't know why but I feel as if we've already screwed up... We got distracted by the "Ooh shiny" thing and the Boogie didn't see us, we could've hid in the vent, it could've skittered by and then returned to its position... Now that we've crossed, it has time to catch up to us because we have to hit the panel of the door to open it. Which, unfortunately, takes time...

I only joined about a week ago so that is news to me. (I scanned through the previous posts, but not in exacting detail.) Perhaps that will be useful info for future, but in this case it has already been demonstrated that the lead Sentinel will keep moving forward even while we are in the duct. (Or perhaps it had another way of sensing us, or knew where that duct went, and thus pursued us around the corner?) Whatever the reason, we should assume that the lead Sentinel will continue forward to the final corridor whether it sees us or not. Even if we could maneuver out of its LoS long enough for it to get out of our way, there is still the other Sentinel to worry about, and trying to dodge both of these huge creatures in such a small area sounds like an impossible task. Also, it would probably involve a lot more decision points than our storyteller would want to deal with! :P

Remember that Boogies (at least in the early parts) Abandon their search when they've checked your last known location. Jingle herself pointed this out.

Conclusion: Need For Speed. Taken at its simplest, we should treat this as a room-filling trap rather than one where we can maneuver around the hazards. We need to cover about 12 squares before the lead Sentinel moves 2.5. With an estimated speed ratio of 5:1, that does not give us much room to spare. I'm pretty sure at this point that the coin (Ooh shiny!) and the vending machine ("Meat Sandwich"?) are speed traps. I too am terribly curious about the vending machines, and I love snacks, but not at the cost of becoming a snack ourselves. I'd rather these Boogies eat our dust than Jingle All the Way. We're on the clock so let's burn some rubber/latex. (Bonus: I think one of the lessons of this room is that we overthink things!) ;P

What we now know (sort of): 1. We can move 3-6 squares for every 1 the Sentinels move. 2. The Sentinels are at least 4 squares long. Long enough that trying to maneuver around both of them seems insane. 3. We have 2 Sentinel steps remaining before the lead one cuts us off.

Ugh. Getting some heartburn on this decision. The duct does offer us a possible chance to break LoS and perhaps pull off an end-run around these guys. Very tempting, but giving up our speed and mobility bit us hard already. There are also just too many unknowns with that route. We still don't know what senses the Sentinels can use to track us, we don't know if they can see into the duct (their eyes seem low enough that it is possible), and we don't know if they can attack us inside the duct, even if their body type might suggest that they cannot easily enter. And on top of all that, the duct option seems like it would require a VERY convoluted series of follow-up decisions in order to then get to the door panel, open the door, and somehow escape without getting trapped by either Sentinel that will likely continue to move around the entire time.
