Head Up High (Second Section)

Yo!

Do you like smooth chords with a contemporary sound? Warning: these chords are best performed and enjoyed by adults with mature sensibility and taste.

Like many of the parts I teach on this page, this one uses some extensive muting technique so that we get a good variety between the chords and a percussive, shaker like style.

---

Chord-wise, there's a lot to unpack here. The first 2 triads I play in each phrase are Gmaj to Amin. However, both chords happen over 2 different bass notes, changing the functions of these chords.

For example, m1 (measure 1) of bass has C in the root, which makes the Gmaj sound like a Cmaj7, and the Amin sound like a C6. When these 2 chords come back in at m3, the bass in on A, making the Gmaj  sound like an Amin11 and the Amin sound like an Amin.

This idea of simple triads over changing bass notes is the key to the a sophisticated and mature sound.

The very last chord in m8 is something I like to call the Prince chord. I believe it's used in the song Kiss.

Preemptive apologies because this is probably not the right place to post this, but I was thinking: For your next milestone post, what about a tandem lesson with Jim Roach? He could teach you something from Shadow Academy, and you could teach him something from one of your projects (or maybe even one of the leveled up Starbomb songs). People are very excited about Shadow Academy right now, so it might bring in some new patrons. I'm sure most of the TWRP fans realize you have a Patreon, but I don't know about the NSP and Starbomb fans. (And the venn diagram of NSP fans, Starbomb fans, and Shadow Academy fans is probably a circle.) Just a thought I had while I was making dinner...

Fascinating stuff, music theory! Amazing how changing a single note can change the whole context. Enjoying the tour posts, safe travels!

Love these chords! Excited to mess around with them Noticing your lovely Tele, would you at all be interested in making a vid about why and when you use your different guitars? Or is it just whatever mood your in that day? Also have a great time in Texas! Was planning on being at the Dallas show back in January, but alas, I will have to catch you next tour.

That's so clever! It makes for a really satisfying sound too. Thanks, teach! See you at the show tonight :)

Also, heads up that this month's shred lord post will come a little later than usual, once I'm back from TWRP's Texas dates. Thanks for your patience!
