AtFC Chapter 57 - The Old Guardian

In the middle of the great formation, a sludge of flesh and bone was slowly rebuilding itself into a humanoid form. Then her mouth formed, once again. The worst part.

“Please kill me, please kill me, please kill me, I beg of you, please kill me… Please kill me!”

Like a mantra of hopelessness, the corrupted young girl pleaded to Artorias as he put the finishing touches on the seal. The seal that would kill them both, keep them separated from the rest of the world for centurie...

Small announcement

Hello everyone! Thank you so much for your support so far!

Just popping in to let you all know that all tiers will be getting at least 4 chapters a week going forward!

I've received some feedback that $15 is too much for 12 chapters a month, and that is very fair. If I knew a simple way to decrease the cost of subscribing after the initial month, I would absolutely do that, but increasing the release frequency is the best I can do for now. For those of you with more sense (hehe), ...

Chapter 56 - Love at First Sight

The white-haired girl on stage soon finished her song, looking up at the spotlight shining down on her.

“I never lived in a forest!” Elania complained. “Elves haven’t lived in forests like that for millennia! And I definitely didn’t sing love songs by myself.”

"I'm sure you wouldn't mind living in one, though," Daniel said, unable to suppress the grin spreading across his face. He leaned back in his seat, savoring this reversal of their earlier positions.

Elania ...

Chapter 55 - Early Life

The curtains parted, revealing a scene Daniel almost recognized. A small harbor in a small village, where a small boy sat with his legs hanging off the docks, staring out at the audience.

Ah, that must be in Barrelton. And that’s me, I suppose.

The boy looked nothing like him, really. Too round-faced and theatrical in his sadness. But there was something charming about the attempt.

"Artorias!" a voice shouted from off stage, projecting loudly enough to reach the b...

Chapter 54 - The Legend

The couple walked away from the tower and entered the old city center, with Elania's arm looped comfortably through his. The evening air was cool and pleasant, carrying the scent of street food and expensive perfumes.

Wide cobblestone streets lit by magical lamps stretched between fancy stores and mansions, marking this as the finer part of the city. A group of nobles laughed outside a wine bar, and children in pristine clothes chased each other while their nannies watched careful...

Chapter 53 - The Return of Edward

Later, back in their quarters, Daniel sat on the couch humming a tune. The melody was something from Earth, though he couldn’t quite place it. He watched Felicia practicing her Sarun magic on the couch across from him.

The red cylinder still hovered in the middle of the room, containing the small star of magic Felicia had fired at Zoltran. It was suspended in perfect stasis, glowing much dimmer now that time was stretching its energy.

"You seem cheerful," Felicia noted, turning ...

Chapter 52 - Elementary Formations

Daniel didn't hurry quite as much on the way back to the academy, instead choosing to take a flying carriage. The ride was smooth and pleasant, giving him time to think about the lesson ahead as the city passed below.

He arrived well in time for his lesson, and quickly grabbed some food from the dining hall before heading to the classroom—toast with ringberry jam, and a delicious bonner as a treat.

He ate while walking, savoring the toast and the sweet, creamy pastry. Simple ple...

Chapter 51 - Comfort

Daniel lay there in bed, looking up at a ceiling that was both familiar and nostalgic. The wood grain patterns were exactly as he remembered them. His bed, in his room, kept just as it used to be for a thousand years.

Elania’s arm was folded over his chest, making small circles on him with her finger. Her head rested against his shoulder, and her breath tickled his neck on every exhale.

“...So now we just have to help this mermaid learn formations to give them an edge ov...

Chapter 50 - Acceptance

Not even five minutes later, Daniel stood in front of the old house.

He'd been running through the academy halls like a madman to reach a window, startling several students who pressed themselves against walls as he'd sprinted past. Then he launched himself out of it using his momentum magic.

That wasn’t a great idea since he ended up falling helplessly through the air, but no one could deny it was effective, moving him way faster than any public transportation could. Luck...

Chapter 49 - Advanced Formations 101

The next day, Daniel entered the lecture room reasonably early, finding that only a few students and an old professor had arrived before him. This was the class of advanced formations, where graduating students and even school assistants struggled to keep up.

Or at least that used to be the case…

Daniel surveyed the space. This won't be an easy change.

The room was fairly large, easily fitting a few hundred students. It smelled faintly of parchment and so...

Chapter 48 - Deep Marks

Daniel pulled the papers closer, trying to hold his anger. But his mind decrypted the formations before he could stop himself.

Every part of their bodies was mapped in high detail, showing exactly what the intentions behind the formations were. Mana-gathering circuits on the arms and legs, with runes and circles leading to right below their navels, where the mana pool was centered around.

The mana gathered through the formation from the surroundings would be forcefully pushed into...

Chapter 47 - Essence of Formations

Daniel looked over at Felicia, finally feeling at peace again.

It had irked him all day, not knowing she was safe, wondering whether the other students were treating her well. Worrying whether she was overwhelmed, struggling, or hiding her discomfort behind that brave face she wore too often.

And instead of calmly trying to convince himself that this was for the best, he was thinking of formations he could carve into her index to keep a watch and protect her from a distance....

Chapter 46 - Professor Morin

A beautiful red-headed mermaid in a wheelchair. That’s what Daniel had brought in.

Long, scaled tail folded up beneath her, and a dark green shirt sticking closely to her body, seemingly made of kelp or some other underwater plant. And a wide, childlike smile on her face.

How did your trip to the port end up like this, Danny?

Behind her, Felicia heard one of the other students make a strangled sound of surprise. A book hit the floor with a soft thud.

"Her na...

Chapter 45 - Weirdo Class

The world serpent was perhaps the threat Daniel feared the most.

It was a force of nature, a being from prehistoric times so large it could circle most countries. A creature he'd sketched into his worldbuilding document in a few casual paragraphs, never intending for it to actually matter to the story. It wasn't meant to wake up, only exist as an interesting part of the world he created—background lore to make things feel deeper, more ancient.

Now it was real. And awake. A...

Chapter 44 - Merry Greetings

Daniel stared down at the water's surface, barely making out a human face staring back up at him. He could sense her clear as day through his mana, watching him with curious eyes.

Artorias had never seen a mermaid before, so Daniel had no idea what exactly they would look like. But the reality was shockingly close to the mermaids in the Disney classic. Perfectly human upper body, which transitioned seamlessly into a fish-like tail covered in shimmering scales.  Maybe because that...

Chapter 43 - Real Fisherman

The port of Novanny had changed a lot in a thousand years, like everything else.

Even the general shape was different, with buildings stretching out into the sea, standing on thick wooden beams that reached deep into the water. What had once been a simple harbor with basic docks had transformed into a sprawling maritime district.

Still, it was marked by the same two rivers running through the city, cutting through the port district in the same spot. There were still traces he coul...

Interlude 1

The seven seats of power were all filled, for the first time in years.

It was a dark chamber, but every surface was made from polished black marble inlaid with gold. Lit by a constellation of stars hovering near the ceiling, the room was dim as the night sky.

The atmosphere was oppressive, thick enough to choke anyone not seated in one of the seven chairs. But even they hesitated.

A figure at the head of the table leaned forward, fingers steepled beneath their chin. The star...

Chapter 42 - Enrollment

Quill's office was just as it had been when they left it, except for two young adults sitting in front of his desk. Daniel could hear the tail end of what sounded like an argument from outside, but now it was suddenly quiet.

Quill stood from his desk the moment he saw who entered, while the students only glanced back at him from their seats. Interestingly, they seemed more focused on Felicia than on him.

"Good morning, Sir!" Quill's enthusiasm was so obvious that both students tur...

Chapter 41 - An Early Morning

The next day started early, as Felicia entered Daniel’s room and opened the curtains, letting the sun shine directly on his face.

"Morning, great hero!" Her voice was far too cheerful for whatever ungodly hour this was. "What say you we get an early start to the day?"

"Mmmfh."

Daniel pulled the pillow over his face, but even the soft down didn't stop the light completely. The brightness burned through the fabric, turning his eyelids into screens of painful orange.

Chapter 40 - Contracted Spirit

Felicia felt none of the confidence Daniel was showing on his face.

“My magic? But it’s just…”

Just a tiny light.

How could that possibly impress the headmaster of the greatest magic academy in Javos? The elf who had lived for millennia?

“Don’t worry, he won’t make fun of you no matter what you do.”

Daniel's voice was reassuring, but it didn't stop the nervous flutter in her chest.

“Not her, no,” Zoltran replied. “I’d never ...

Chapter 39 - Young Visitor

Felicia wasn't sure what to make of the boy standing in their doorway.

He was young—couldn't be more than ten or eleven—but there was something odd about the way he carried himself. He studied her as well, showing neither respect nor pride. Just plain curiosity.

"You can come in while we wait," she said carefully, stepping aside to let him pass. Her mana-sight swept over him, trying to understand what she was sensing. "He will be right out."

"Perfect," the boy replied, w...

Chapter 38 - New Home

Daniel and Felicia were back in the elevator, which was just as slow on the way down as it was up. But Daniel appreciated it this time, taking the opportunity to lean his back against the wall and just breathe.

What a day. What an impossible, overwhelming day.

His neck still throbbed where Elania's blade had cut him, and the makeshift bandage was damp against his skin. His nose still felt stuffy, same as his throat.

Meeting his family. Confronting a tyrant. Summonin...

Chapter 37 - A Wonderful Life

Daniel put his arm around Felicia’s back, pulling her closer for a moment before letting go. She smiled, reflecting his own as he looked down at her.

“Thanks, Fillie. I’m okay.”

The words were as much for himself as for her. He was okay. Shaken, overwhelmed, bleeding from the neck, but fundamentally okay. The future looked brighter now.

“I knew you would be. She will return here as fast as possible, I’m quite sure.”

“I know,” Daniel replied, nodding s...

Chapter 36 - Winter Flowers

Nothing moved for an entire eternity. That’s what it felt like for everyone involved, though it really only lasted for nine seconds.

Elania stood in the doorway, frozen mid-sentence. White hair that fell past her shoulders, pointed ears that marked her elven heritage, and the face Daniel somehow remembered perfectly despite never having seen it with his own eyes.

She was exactly as beautiful as his memories claimed, but also more real than any memory could capture. The sli...

Chapter 35 - Time To Wake Up

The bonds awakened like stars igniting in darkness, one after another, each one flooding Daniel with power and recognition. Four distinct signatures, four familiar patterns of magic that he'd carried dormant for a thousand years.

The white domain began to crack.

Reality itself seemed to shudder as the first bond fully ignited. The air around Daniel rippled, distorting like heat waves, but wrong—like space itself was folding and unfolding in rapid succession. Layers of e...

Chapter 34 - The Patriarch

Daniel could already tell the patriarch of the Grifantes family was an unpleasant man before seeing his face. The mana signature approaching was heavy with age and accumulated power, openly threatening those around him.

And when the old man rounded the doorframe, it did nothing to change his mind. In fact, it confirmed every negative impression.

Clad in a black suit that probably cost more than most people earned in a year, he held a golden cane in his right hand—not for support...

Chapter 33 - Invisible

Given that the Grifantes were the remaining family of the greatest formationist in history, the elevator they had made was unbearably slow. Faster than taking the stairs, but that much was a requirement when the building was the height of a big mountain.

At least the view will be interesting.

He extended his mana outward carefully, using it to keep track of the number of floors they passed. The magical density shifted subtly at each level—different wards, different purp...
