Roll With It (Chorus)

Today we're going to be looking at the chorus from Roll With It.

This is a pretty long winded one - start by memorizing all the left hand shapes, as well as the chromatic walk ups wherever they happen. Once you have that, get used to the palm muted rhythm, lifting your palm up for the syncopated accents.

This is an example of one of my favourite guitar sounds to use - very saturated and sizzly.  You can get close with any Marshall amp tone or imitation, with an overdrive in front of it. Having a sound like this really comes alive when you pinch the pick near the edge and let the pinch harmonics happen.

The concept of pitch harmonics is making me so happy--I adore that there are all these little adornments you can add just by varying up how or where you're hitting the string. Guitar is so COOL! Besides that, Roll With It is possibly my favorite track off the new album, so I'm loving the breakdown. Definitely going to have to start poking at this!

The unmuted notes on their own create a syncopated rhythm, but it's loose and there's lots of slight variations in this rhythm from chord to chord. So it is mostly just a feel thing. There's no 3rds or 9ths in any of the chords, unless I'm accidentally hitting an extra string or something like that. Haha!

Cold brew is the best. Even if it's snowing outside.

Love this song so much. Question: at certain times you play accented power chords, other times you're just playing the single note, and then you end with the root + seventh/octave + third/ninth (I think). Is there any conscious decision to switch between these, or just whatever feels/sounds good?

loving these morning posts tbh. start my day with a cold brew and a good dose of rock and roll.
