Ninja Sex Party - Release the Kraken (Intro)

I don't know who this band is or why we're learning this song today, but here we go!

TAB is attached as a PDF and Guitar Pro file.

...

Quick Breakdown / Theory Talk:

In measures 1-2, you're playing 2 note versions of the following chords: D major, C major, G major.  This repeats again in measures 3-4.

In measures 5-6, you're now playing 3 note versions of the same 3 chords. This completes each chord, building up the riff and creating a fuller sound.

Measures 7-8 use some beefy power chords to turn us around into the verse, where the vocals enter for the first time.

Pro Tips:

If you look closely at my left hand, you'll see that my thumb is wrapped over the top of the neck, and my 2nd finger is lightly lying on the A string. These things are both done to prevent the bottom 2 strings from ringing out by accident. In addition, the underside of my 1st finger is lightly touching the top 2 strings, B and E. All of this careful positioning allows me to essentially strum all 6 strings, but only have the 2 notes ring out which you're supposed to be hearing. I've spent lots of time working on this muting technique, and you should too! The result is that you can hit the strings much harder without having to worry about hitting the wrong strings by accident. Hitting the strings harder = better timing, and more 'tude. (But if you're newer to the instrument, don't worry about this muting technique, and instead focus on only picking the strings you need to play at any particular moment.)

Occasionally, I apply vibrato to the chords, particularly the 5th fret 4th string & 4th fret 3rd string - this is notated in the TAB. This makes things sound WILD!

Tone Talk:

Use the bridge pickup of your guitar. Most of the time, this is the edgiest sounding of all your pickup positions and will work really well for rock n roll. Not sure which position this is? On the majority of guitars it's the lowest one towards the floor. Still not sure? Tap on your pickups with a finger, and if it is selected you should hear a dull tapping sound come through your amp.

Oooh, that's a nice sound.

That's great to hear!

Because we listen to a song hundreds of times over and over again in the studio and obsess over every tiny detail, often times I can't help but be super analytical when listening to my own stuff, even way after it's finished. I will say though that over the years I start to distance myself from this a little bit, and can listen to it passively again and enjoy it a bit more. Thanks for the question!

Kind of a random question, I know at least some of the TWRP guys were fans of NSP before y'all started working together, but now that you're basically in the band, do you still find yourself listening to NSP at all (or did you ever do begin with)? I know some artist don't tend to listen to their own work. I just kinda wondered where you stand on that: listening to your own music or music you've worked on. Hope you're having a good one! And thanks for another great lesson! :)

Very cool! I've heard this song like...maybe twice tops, but I love how bold and friendly and adventurous this bit sounds. I'm also excited that more and more of these posts are starting to make sense as I learn more :D Have a great one, teach!
