Cosmic Tides (Intro)

Here's the intro from a fun instrumental track by a band named TWRP. Perhaps you've heard of them?

Pro Tips:

This one takes a funky Nile Rodgers-ish approach. The best way to sum this playing style up is that your left hand plays the chords while your right hand is care free, loosely strumming in a percussive and rhythmic way.

Sometimes the left hand isn't pressing down on the chord fully when your right hand strums, and you get these funky muted percussive sounds.

Since the right hand is loosely doing its own thing, it's going to hit all 6 strings at different times. But each chord in this song is only 3 or 4 notes. You'll need to mute the other strings somehow, so that they only produce a quick muted sound, and not a long blarf sound.

If you watch the video closely, you'll see that I don't use my 3rd finger for any of the fretted notes (on the 1st chord I use fingers 1, 2, and 4). Instead, it lightly lies on the bottom 2 strings (E and A), just enough to stop the strings from ringing out. Also, my 1st finger is angled in such a way where it blocks the high E string from doing the same.

If you pull this off correctly, the right hand can do its own thing and the only notes that ring through are the 3 note chords.

This is a technique that requires, practice, practice, and more practice. But it's the foundation of all funky guitar playing - so it's worth it!

Theory Talk:

The chord progression is:

D minor 7 - C major - F major
Bb major -  D minor 7 - C major

(x3)

Bb major - G7/B - Bb major/C

The chord voicings used in this song are very similar to the ones used in The Hit, and also Friends by Dragon Sound.

Scoopin lmao such a great tune!! This whole album feels like nostalgia to me, this and Under the Sun specifically! It just sounds like a lazy summer day day in California! I know that wasn’t intentional but Id consider it a good thing

Dezzi

Loving that Music Man guitar.

Cosmic Tides gives me the perfect summer chill vibe which is just what I need in this snowstorm!

Cosmic Tides is such a bop! Guitar can do so many crazy things with all the muting and strumming options. Stay safe and have a fantastic week!

Oh hell yeah, Scoopin — such a chill/funky song! Funny you mentioned Dragon Sound, after watching Miami Connection I had been wondering whether y’all had pulled some influence/inspiration from them. A couple questions I forgot to ask when I saw you on tour: 1) Did Dylan ever tell you who had the right pronunciation of my username (dingelle) correct? 2) Can you snap? Thanks for the lesson! And for recommending Vitas! I’ve started listening to them regularly. It’s just a good vibe. Hope you’re doing well and staying safe!

Totally needed this today! It’s so chill and relaxing. Thanks guitar man, have a good one and stay safe and healthy!!
