More like guitar tips, am I right?
...
Pro Tips:
- Play the whole riff in the 5th position, and hop down to the 3rd position to play just the last 3 notes.
- Sometimes my right hand keeps picking even when there's no note played. This can create a cool percussive sound if your left hand is muting the string.
- Like any of the riffs you see on this page, start slow and focus on accuracy. Playing it up to speed with the recording won't happen overnight, but over time it will come naturally as your hands become more comfortable with the motions.
Theory Tips:
- This riff is in a D minor pentatonic scale. The notes are: D - F - G - A - C
- At the very end, there's a chromatic passing note connecting C and D - C#. Any time you have 2 scale notes that are a whole step apart, putting the middle note in between the two can sound super cool and jazzy. Just don't stay on the chromatic note too long!
Tone Talk:
Hear how my guitar sounds all spanky? If any of you have a strat you can do this - use the second lowest position with your pickup switch. This gives you a combo of the bridge and middle pickups. When mixed together it gives you a sound that's super great for funky stuff. If you have a tele, Gibson or any other 2 pickup guitar, use the middle position which combines your bridge and neck pickup. That will also get you in a similar ballpark.
*BONUS* Business Tips:
Due to the nature of this track, I'm going to include some business tips free of charge. Feel free to leave your own business tips in the comments below.
- Show up on time. Don't be one minute late, and don't even consider being more than 30 seconds early.
- Keep every single receipt you receive in your wallet, for the rest of your life.
- Dress for the job you want, not that you have (my Adidas tracksuit is no coincidence)
