Left Hand Tips:
The left hand is in position 11 for measures 1 and 3, and position 9 for measures 2 and 4. Partway through measure 4, I slide my left hand up to position 14 to finish.
Take a close look at the video to get a feel for how this all goes down. Also, if you click the gear at the bottom of the YouTube video, you can slow the video playback down all the way to quarter speed.
The very last note in measure 4 deserves the best wiggle you can give it. Shake that string around, show it who's boss!
Right Hand Tips:
The main picking pattern is:

1 & 2 & 3 & 4 &
(d = downstroke, u = upstroke)
In measure 4, the picking pattern changes to:
d d u d d u d d u d
1 & 2 & 3 & 4 &
Don't forget to palm mute the open D string :)
Theory Talk:
The scale I used to fry up this hot riff is D mixolydian. It's made up of these notes:
D E F# G A B C
You can play the scale by playing the following frets all on the G string:
---7---9---11---12---14---16---17---
The open D string in between is also in the scale, because it's a D mixolydian scale, you dingus!
